Official Opening of Supportive Housing

It was wonderful to see our community partners and supporters out for the official ribbon cutting at Supportive Housing, now to be known as Emily's Place! We are grateful for the continued support of our affordable housing units. Affordable housing is crucial to protect the vulnerable in our community. Public Health Students Partner with MH

This winter, six students from the University of Waterloo Public Health Program partnered with Michael House to create a cookbook for our families. The book included information on nutrition for mother and child, as well as easy-to-prepare recipes tested in their own kitchens. The students made the trip out to Guelph on Saturday, March 4th to present copies of the book to the families at Supportive Housing. Residents and staff alike were thrilled by the final product.

Home Makeover Project Donates over $100,000

Earlier this summer, the Wellington Catholic District School Board presented Michael House with a cheque for $102,837 in support of our capital campaign, A Home for Generations. This funding comes from the sale of the Amazing Home Makeover house which sold this past April. The presentation of the cheque marks the culmination of a 10-month home renovation project executed by high school students at Wellington Catholic. Working alongside skilled trade professionals, students fully gutted, renovated, and staged the home located at 70 Talbot Street in Guelph all while gaining hands on experience and supporting Michael House. “It’s a wonderful thing to witness,” said Marino Gazzola, Chair of the Wellington Catholic District School Board. “Students learning and working for the shared benefits of the community is exactly the kind of socially conscious citizen we strive to foster at Wellington Catholic. We couldn’t be more proud of the great work the students have done. This partnership with Michael House is a great example of how our staff and students are working to build an inclusive and caring community.” The cheque was presented by Technology Department head at WCDSB, Brian Andres, who oversaw and led the Amazing Home Makeover project. “We owe huge recognition to our partners,” said Andres. “To be able to provide this experience to our students while supporting Michael House is such a gift and wouldn’t have been possible without Tambro Construction and all of our generous partners.” The Michael House family is exceedingly grateful to all those who made this initiative possible!

Beyond Borders Students Make a Difference

Beyond Borders is a program for students in grade 12 that offers a unique, integrated and experiential opportunity to combine Business Management, English, International Business, Advanced Functions, and Leadership learning with a focus on globalization, technology, and social responsibility. This semester, the group of active, involved, and community-minded students made a Michael House Supportive Housing Unit their project. They raised over $2,400 in just 2 hours through a car wash. Then they used the funds to decorate and furnish one of our units and the play area in our Atrium. We were very impressed throughout their whole process of fundraising, planning, and implementing with compassion and enthusiasm! Check out the video of their journey: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=kHxndzEDo_A. You can also read about the work these students and other students in Guelph are doing to support our Home For Generations, here: http://www.guelphtribune.ca/news-story/5951415-amazing-home-makeovers-put-guelph-students-in-renovation-mode/. We cannot thank the hardworking and thoughtful students, and their supportive teachers, enough for the lasting impact they have made on the young families that will live in the beautiful "Beyond Borders Suite!"

Amazing Home Makeover: Student Edition

Have you heard about "Amazing Home Makeover: Student Edition"? The construction class at Bishop Macdonell Catholic High School, along with the help of many other community partners including Tambro Construction, have purchased a house that they will renovate over the course of the semester. When they sell the home they will be donating the profits to Michael House! We are so excited about this project. It is truly a win for these students, our community, the new family that will live in the home, and the moms and babies here at Michael House. Many, many thanks to all involved!

Reno Da Maren Memorial Car Show Supports MH

The second annual car show and cruise in memory of Reno Da Maren took place on Saturday July 11th.  We were blessed with great weather, and over 100 cars were shown! Delicious food, music, door prizes and a 50/50 draw also contributed to the day's success. Almost $1,000 was raised! Michael House thanks the many people involved in running this event, and the dear family of Reno Da Maren for choosing to support our mission.

Guelph’s “Shout Sister!” Choir Sings for MHPCC

Guelph’s “Shout Sister!” choir made a “joyful noise” for Michael House. They performed on June 2nd at St. Andrew's Presbyterian church in Guelph. Director Beth Becker and the choir continued the Shout Sister tradition of giving back to the community. They dedicate their annual fundraiser to helping their communities.  They are also found throughout the year performing at other fundraisers and at senior’s homes.  Their performances are joyful occasions and their audiences respond with delight to their enthusiasm and energy. There are 19 Chapters of Shout Sister! Choir in Ontario now.  Shout Sister! takes an unorthodox approach to choral singing. They do not audition and they sing a fun variety of music from pop and Motown, to folk, to a touch of country and blues. Choristers learn from recorded tracks so an ability to read music is not required. THANKS to "Shout Sister!" in Guelph for choosing Michael House. You have touched lives not only through the joy of singing, but through your financial support of our mission.

HomeLife Realty Garage Sale

On May 23, 2015, HomeLife Realty (Guelph) hosted a garage sale in front of their office on Gordon Street. After months of hard work in organizing, planning, and gathering items from their staff, clients, and community members, the event was a great success! It was a fun morning, including games for kids and a BBQ for the whole family. Gerome the Gnome even made an appearance! Michael House was thrilled to receive over $1,600 in donations! We are thrilled to have the support of the caring business partners in our community. Thanks to everyone who shopped or had a hamburger, and a BIG thank you goes to HomeLife Realty!
