What’s in a Name?

“Michael” Means Safety, Shelter, and Love

Michael was a little boy from Guelph, Ontario who was diagnosed with down syndrome prior to his birth. Despite negative reactions from medical staff, who suggested Michael would have a difficult life, Michael’s parents continued the pregnancy. We named ourselves after the love and safety they created in their home for young Michael. “Michael House” symbolizes the safety and shelter it provides for expectant and new mothers and their children in difficult circumstances.

Our History

Our Beginning

Michael House Pregnancy and Parenting Support Services has been providing shelter and support to pregnant and parenting women for over 20 years. We began our pregnancy and parenting support in Guelph, Ontario on October 12, 2001 when we were granted independent charitable status. That day began with our first toonie and followed with countless donations and contributions of time, talent, and treasure from many generous churches, schools, businesses, families and individuals.

Our First House

We were soon able to open our first house on Algoma Drive on April 1, 2003. We provided the first shelter in Guelph dedicated to women coping with crisis pregnancy and to their babies. Before this, women in the community had to be referred and moved to agencies and support in other cities. Thanks to Michael House, these women can now remain in their home community.

Give Yourself Credit Program

Since then, Michael House has continued to grow thanks to the generous support from the community. In 2005, we were instrumental in helping to start the “Give Yourself Credit” Program. This independent learning school program provided grants to at-risk Guelph Students. It was an immediate success, serving both Michael House clients and many other youth in the Guelph community.

Moving for More Space

In 2006, we moved from our first three-bedroom home to a six-bedroom house to offer more space for young women and their babies. The larger space also gave us the room to start our Drop-In Program and the Journey Group. By 2007, we were in full swing. We had welcomed and housed over thirty moms and their families, had established important partnerships with the community, and had gained a reputation as an exemplary resource for women in crisis pregnancy situations.

Emily’s Place

The growth continued, allowing us to assist even more women and children to transition to independent living in the community. In 2015 we opened Emily’s Place, a supportive housing apartment building with 8 units. In 2022, we celebrated our twentieth anniversary, looking forward to providing only more support to women and their children of Guelph for another twenty years and more.

A Message From Our Executive Director

Welcome to our website

We are so glad that you have decided to check us out. We Love our families at Michael House – we exist because of them and for them.

Our work is to empower our families that call Michael House home, our care is about providing programming to address areas of need and to instill growth in them so they can overcome and move towards independence and health for themselves and their children.

Our mission is to provide shelter and support during times of stress and when they need it the most. We embrace our families wherever they come from and whatever their story is. It is our desire and prayer that they grab hold of the opportunities that being at Michael House provides for them as they begin a new chapter in their lives.

We know that each woman and family that is part of Michael House is here for a reason and a season of their lives. And in that season, we are all about building them up, advocating on their behalf, giving them tools through programming to make decisions that impact their lives for the better.

We also attend to their mental health by providing group and ongoing individual counseling as they work through a myriad of traumas, addictions, and history so they can begin moving forward and building future stories that are full of hope, well-being, and health!

If you would like to be a part of Michael House as one of our families, as a supporter, as a business and community advocate, we would love to hear from you.

We are excited about what the future holds for Michael House in the coming days and years and we are cheering our families on as they do the hard work of rebuilding their lives and providing for their little ones!
